recallQ: "What do PoliRural+ practices tagged 'people–place bond' have in common, and how is the bond being tested in Mallusjoki?"
recallA: "They turn local heritage, crafts, food and stories into reasons for residents to stay and visitors to come, which counts as social and resource-based rural innovation. In Mallusjoki a technical pilot tests gamification, GIS and AR/VR storytelling to strengthen the person–place bond and pro-environmental behaviour, and the Story Pathways editor turns local audio and video stories into mapped routes."

D2.2 asks the pilots to **"champion a holistic view of innovation"**: social, organisational and resource-based innovation as well as technology. It also asks them to value the "hidden" innovation that does not look high-tech. One form the Atlas of best practices keeps recording is a stronger **bond between people and their place**: reasons for residents to stay, for visitors to come and for both to care about the landscape.

## What it looks like on the ground

Practices tagged "people–place bond" in the Atlas:

- **Lišov Múzeum** (Hont, Slovakia). A community organisation runs a restored traditional house from 1916, a Celtic dwelling and a gallery of more than 400 masks. It uses crafts, informal education and international volunteering to create local pride and attract visitors (prp-082).
- **Farma Roziak** (Môťová, Slovakia). A family farm combines sheep and cattle breeding with cheese, meat and wool products, plus wool-processing courses that keep rural skills alive (prp-084).
- **Olej Hont** (Súdovce, Slovakia). Cold-pressed oils from regional raw materials, sold directly under a regional identity (prp-086).
- **Peregrinus Silva Bohemica** and **Castles of Pošumaví** (Czech-Bavarian border). The first attracts visitors and temporary residents; the second links historic sites, events and local food through storytelling (prp-063, prp-065).

In each case the place's identity is the product, and food, crafts or heritage carry it. That makes these cases close relatives of [short food supply chains](#c/short-food-supply-chains).

## Testing the bond with digital tools

The Finnish pilot in Mallusjoki ([Mallusjoki pilot](#c/mallusjoki-pilot)) treats the bond as something to strengthen on purpose. Its technical pilot run by Smart & Lean Hub tests **gamification, GIS and AR/VR storytelling** to strengthen the person–place bond and **pro-environmental behaviour**. A second tool, the **Story Pathways editor**, turns local audio and video stories into mapped thematic routes with summaries, QR codes and map paths.

For a policy maker the point is practical. A museum, a sheep farm or a castle trail can do the work of attraction and retention that rural strategies usually expect from infrastructure. The Atlas records most of these practices as replicable in other regions.
