Avoin-Map spatial tools
Three map services built for one Finnish village, and how far each had got at mid-term.
Which three services does Avoin-Map build for Mallusjoki, and how far had each got at mid-term?
An Energy Map (backend and interface design completed), a Zoning Map (a private online test version) and an Activity Map and Calendar (a first landing-page mockup). The project also fed spatial planning into the co-design of the Green Cultural Centre.

Avoin-Map: open-source maps for a village's energy, zoning and events

Avoin-Map (“Open-Source Spatial Tools for Smart Rural-Urban Development in Mallusjoki”) is a Develop open-call project in the Mallusjoki pilot. Three Finnish firms build it: Avoin Map Oy (lead), Feydec Oy and the architecture practice Saatsi Arkkitehdit Oy.
Three services, three stages
At mid-term the services had reached different milestones:
| Service | Mid-term state |
|---|---|
| Energy Map | Backend and interface design completed |
| Zoning Map | Advanced to a private online test version |
| Activity Map and Calendar | First landing-page mockup delivered |
Reading the table honestly matters: at mid-term none of the three was a finished public service.
Planning the venue
The project also helped co-design the Green Cultural Centre, the venue at the heart of the village’s rural event strategy. Here spatial planning meets community-building, in a design oriented to the New European Bauhaus. Early practical support included laser scanning, drone imaging and baseline design work.
Why it matters beyond Mallusjoki
The team reports strong stakeholder interest and good potential for reuse beyond the pilot area. The tools are open source, so another village can reuse and adapt the code. Develop projects were due to submit final reports in July 2026; the sources used here describe the mid-term state only.
For a comparable approach at regional scale, built on open geodata, see the local GeoAI knowledge base in chapter 4.
